Digital Economic Mission to South Africa

0409/05/25

Are you a digital entrepreneur? Take part in the economic mission to South Africa at the beginning of May, organised by hub.brussels and AWEX. Head to Cape Town to forge business links in one of Africa’s most dynamic digital ecosystems. B2B meetings, site visits and networking await you!

About

hub.brussels and AWEX are organising an economic mission to South Africa from Monday 5 to Friday 9 May 2025. This mission will target the digital sectors and offer four main (non-exclusive) focuses:

  • artificial intelligence
  • cybersecurity
  • the technologies applicable to smart cities
  • the cultural and creative industries, including gaming

Why South Africa?

South Africa stands out as one of the most dynamic digital ecosystems in Africa, supported by an advanced technological infrastructure and extensive adoption of digital solutions. The country is a regional leader in areas such as fintech, e-commerce and emerging technologies such as AI and blockchain.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is booming, with applications in finance (predictive analysis), health (automated diagnostics), agriculture (data-centred crop management) and education. The technology hubs of Cape Town and Johannesburg are home to a large number of innovative start-ups developing solutions adapted to local challenges.

In cyber security, South Africa combines strong digital connectivity with robust regulatory measures, such as the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). The sector offers significant opportunities for risk management and threat detection solutions.

Technologies applied to smart cities are also flourishing, with innovative projects designed to meet the challenges of rapid urbanisation through the smart management of energy, water and transport resources.

Lastly, the cultural and creative industries (CCI) are becoming increasingly important to the South African economy. Gaming, in particular, is experiencing rapid growth thanks to increased Internet access and the development of games that incorporate unique African themes. Events such as Comic Con Africa are reinforcing this dynamism.
